Old School WordPress Theme

Old School is a WordPress theme that I’m very proud to have had a chance to develop. It is a child theme of the Hybrid theme framework.

The design was by a good friend of mine, Tung Do. Some of you in the WordPress community know him as Small Potato. I only hope I represented his vision in a way that he can be satisfied with. He is definitely a much better designer than I am. It is the most complex design I’ve ever worked on, and attaching it to the Hybrid framework was no small feat.

Old School is the first of many GPL-licensed child themes that I plan to release under the wing of Hybrid. This theme represents my own vision in how WordPress themes should function.

What’s so cool about Old School?

Well, there’s the design. I can’t say enough about how great SP’s design is. Let’s take a look at some of the features:

The theme comes with an extra page template called Showcase. You can view it on the showcase demo page. It includes the feature and tabs sections and can be controlled from the theme settings page. And yes, you can even put the Showcase template on your home page.

It was developed on WordPress 2.7 but should work on 2.6 as well. There’s two major widget sections for the theme. One is in the typical sidebar location while the other is in the footer.

To top off all of the features of Old School, you get the additional benefits of the Hybrid theme, such as great SEO, valid code, and the most powerful framework you can imagine.

Download this theme already!

As always, keep praise and adoration in the comments and support questions in the support forums.

  1. It looks good Justin.

I think the Showcase looks like a frontpage, can it works as such?
I’m kind of missing the opportunity of tabs in the sidebar like with your Options theme. That would lift this theme from looking good, to being my new theme on http://www.voipbloggen.dk πŸ™‚

  2. I can’t remember when I said last time “WOW” seeing a great theme like this one!

  3. Thomas
Yes, you can use it on your front page. I’ve already got a tutorial up on the Showcase template.

I’ll have to disagree about the sidebar tabs though. I think they would actually hurt this design.

    Thank you.

  4. Absolutely awesome justin. Very nice looking theme. I might use it for my personal blog, its time i move it to hybrid.

  5. Thanks. Hybrid has been a lot of fun to work with. It has allowed me to basically put together three themes in about two week’s time.

I’m hoping I can get out loads of cool themes like Old School in the coming months all based on Hybrid.

  6. Now I’ve been playing around with the theme for a bit, and I’m really impressed. I especially like:
    – all the page template of course
    – The secondary widget (in the bottom of the page)
This is just so nicely customizable

Regarding the tabbox, I’ve put it to the test in the ideas forum πŸ™‚

  7. I’m glad you’re enjoying the theme. I’m usually not a huge fan of widgets in the footer area, but once I finished this, I started to like them. You can probably expect more themes in the future with widgets in the footer. Having the Primary and Secondary widget sections allows for this sort of flexibility.

  8. When I am playing with this theme, If I Set a widget template as homepage, then the widgets are all transparent, but when it is a single page, it is showing correctly

  9. There’s a bug with Hybrid that’ll be fixed in the next version to handle this.

  10. This looks like a great child theme. Great work!. I’m going to use the hybride theme after I upgrade to WP2.7. I think i need to do a lot of modifications for what i have in mind though… or make my own child theme I supose. I like the concept of child themes alot.

  11. Hybrid is definitely easy to customize. It doesn’t take too much work to make the theme completely different than the original using a child theme (as evidenced by the Old School theme above).

  12. oh !! small potato is back ?????? great news buddy πŸ™‚
okay, I am going to checkout this new theme πŸ™‚ and btw, I have made a child theme, looking similar to your popcrtics theme .. is it ok for me to use it ?

  13. Yes, you are free to take design elements from my sites. I wouldn’t want to see something completely identical though. It would just make your site less unique.

I can’t comment on whether SP is getting back into the WP theme market. All I can say is that he done the design for this theme in Photoshop.

  14. About the theme, I sent you an email with the link, so that you can check it out
and about SP, I know, he is busy traveling, or he was, and also that he can’t enter the theme market for 1 year from the sale of his website πŸ™‚ .. I was just excited to see his work after a long time.

  15. Awesome !!! I love this theme. And is Free. Wow !!

  16. can you tell me when the next version of hybrid (0.3.3) will be released ?
and why are you not using threaded comments here ?

  17. dinu
    I emailed you back.

Thanks. I hope you enjoy it.

I can’t tell you when 0.3.3 will be released. It’ll be released when it’s ready, which I hope is this week.

I’m undecided on whether I’ll be using threaded comments on this blog.

  18. Well this is easy for me I have been following Justin before the launch of Theme Hybrid now basically live over there.

I have used Hybrid and set up Old School and probably played with every worthwhile theme out there (and quite a few not so worthwhile) and there really is no comparison to Hybrid, it is in a class of its own.

  19. Thanks, Craig. I’m extremely happy with this release.

Hybrid is only going to continue getting better as well. I keep a notes.txt file with every theme I have to kind of jot down what I’d like to fix or enhance about every theme. Hybrid’s notes file is already up to 6kb, which is quite a lot of notes and ideas.

Just a little fun fact. πŸ˜‰

  20. I tried to use the theme, but the template is missing and won’t work.

  21. The theme works fine. You probably made a mistake when uploading it. Stop by the support forums, and we’ll see if we can get it working for you.

  22. Chris

Aceman67 is right. The Showcase page template is not listed as an option in the drop down box for page templates. Trying to check out the Old School theme without getting to see the Showcase template is like trying to eat peanut butter without jelly… it’s just not the same.

  23. Aceman67 mentions nothing about the Showcase template. If you need help using the Showcase template, feel free to stop by the support forums.

  24. Small Potato

I didn’t see this release until now. Like I said in the email, nice job man.

@dinu – I can come back to wp whenever I want to. There was no no-complete clause attached to the sale of wpdesigner.

  25. Amazing theme, Thanks Justin

  26. WOW! Nice theme.

  27. TAES815

Can anyone explain why it says template is missing on the Old School theme?

  28. Claudio and thinchhia — Thanks. I’m glad you both like it.

TAES815 — It is likely you’ve installed the theme incorrectly. Stop by the support forums, and we’ll help you out if you’re having trouble.

Just started using this theme on a new site, and really like it. Inspired me to join the theme club!

Best theme ever! thanks so much

  31. nice theme..
did u have themes for High School?..

  32. hello, this item is spectacular, and right now I use it on my blog cavandounhoyo.tk but I have two problems, first when I open a post in particular do not get the title of the post, and I could not change it for me to leave the author of each post, Please help.
Is that by default the item does not display the author of the post, I like to modify them, but what if you do not know why that happened is when I open the post is not the title. Thanks, I’m an inexperienced help and also do not speak English.

    Thank you.

  33. James

I am helping a friend start up a blog and this would be the perfect theme but I am having a problem. The navigation bar at the top shows the links to the pages in a small white font without any spacing or highlighting of the page i am on like in the demo. Is there a fix for this?
