As a kid, my family would always take trips to the mountains in the summer. Being from Alabama, that meant traveling north to the Smoky Mountains in the Tennessee and North Carolina area. We’d usually pack at least two cars. Grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and the kids. Some of the best times of my life were hiking those mountains and getting a slight relief from the harsher summer heat in Alabama.
I found myself perusing a collection of mountain photos recently, which reminded me of those summers many years past. I wanted to design a child theme for Exhale inspired by that feeling.
That’s the story of how the Mountains theme was born.
Mountains is a child theme of the Exhale parent theme. That means it includes everything Exhale does, including things such as:
- Block editor (Gutenberg) support.
- Font options (currently 160+ Google fonts).
- Color and other design options.
- Custom page templates.
- 404 page builder.
- And much more.
I wanted to go with a minimal-grayscale approach with the design. The default colors, which can be customized, are primarily black, white, and grays.
For the body copy, I went with a nice, sans-serif font (Source Sans Pro). However, I wanted to have a bit more fun with the default headings font and quickly fell in love with Oleo Script. Of course, fonts can be customized to create whatever atmosphere you’re after with your site.
