Old School comes with an additional page template called “Showcase.” This template has a tabbed feature section on the left and a widget area on the right. Below that is a tabbed category section.
Setting up the Showcase page template
The first thing you need to do before using the “Showcase” template is setting up your options. In your WordPress admin, go to “Appearance > Theme Settings”. On this page, you’ll see a section called “Showcase page template settings.”
Once there, you need to select a category for your Feature and between one and six categories for your Tabs. Note that if your category names are lengthy, you may not be able to fit all six in the tabbed area.
OK. Now, all you have to do is save your settings and you’re done with this step.
Using the page template
You need to create a new page from your WordPress admin. You can name it anything you like. For the sake of this example, we’ll name our page “Showcase”.
Now, you need to find the “Attributes” meta box and select “Showcase” from the Page Template drop-down box.
Once all that work’s done, you can start adding posts.
Adding posts and images to your Showcase template
Remember those categories you chose earlier? Well, those will come in handy now. Anytime you want a post to appear in the Feature or Tabs sections, you only need to give your post one of those categories.
To display an image for your posts, you need to upload an image using the “Featured Image” box on the edit post screen.
Using the feature widget section
So, you’ve noticed the widgetized area next to the feature articles, have you? Well, it’s actually pretty easy to use.
In the “Widgets” screen in the WordPress admin, find the sidebar named “Feature” and add a widget to it.
I recommend only adding one widget to this section as it’s kind of small. You don’t want to break the layout with too much.
Once you’ve saved your sidebar, it’ll show up on any pages using the “Showcase” page template.
Using the Showcase template on your home page
Some of you may want to use the “Showcase” template on your home page. Well, that’s perfectly fine and really simple to do.
In your WordPress admin, go to “Settings > Reading”. At the top, you’ll see a section labeled “Front Page Displays”. You need to select “A static page” here. Then, choose the page you’ve added the “Showcase” template to.
It’s as simple as that. Once saved, your home page will be using the “Showcase” page template.
