Help w Prototype Theme

8 Replies ·

  1. I’m working on this site, http://downriverarc.org
    I used the Prototype theme, and a child theme.
    They asked me to use the new logo, already uploaded. And they want me to remove the site title, “Downriver Arc”.
    When I went in and removed the text, I got an error displayed in the header,
    link http://downriverarc.org/wp-content/themes/prototype/images/favicon.ico

    And the tagline moved up.
    I did this site design for them a couple of years ago, and don’t recall much of the details unfortunately.

    So just want the site title removed, and the tagline to stay down low.

    To remove the title, you need to remove this line from header.php:

    <?php hybrid_site_title(); ?>

    You’ll need to add some padding to the top of the description to push it down. Something like:

    .site-description { padding-top: 30px; }

    You’ll need to adjust that number.

    This line of code that you’re seeing on your site is something that’s been added (not from the original Prototype theme):

    link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://downriverarc.org/wp-content/themes/prototype/images/favicon.ico" />

    Most likely, that’s something that’s been added to your header.php file.

    It’s also possible that it’s something that’s been hooked to prototype_header via your functions.php file.

    The only reason you’re not seeing it before removing the site title is that it’s been pushed out of view. Once you remove the site title, the code comes back into view.

    OK, got that fixed.
    Now they want to add another page. But adding another page breaks the menu when it looks like there’s still space.
    What’s restricting the menu width?

    On line 442 of your style.css, you have the secondary menu limited to 680px:

    #menu-secondary div.menu {
        float: left;
        width: 680px;
    }

    You can make that wider (up to 978px).

    Also, please try to open a new topic when you have a new and unrelated question. It helps others when searching for similar questions in the future. Thanks. 🙂

    The 680 width was in the Prototype Theme. I didn’t have it in my child theme. So I added the 978 width to the child theme, but it seemed to have no effect. Still breaking the menu display if I add one more page to the menu. Is there is a hidden element in the menu space on the right?

    I just tested with the new width and was able to add 3 additional menu items as you can see in the following screenshot:

    Unless the menu item name is really long, it should fit fine.

    Also, it’s possible that your browser is caching the old stylesheet, so you might need to clear your cache or do a hard reset. Hitting the Fn + f5 keys on most keyboards should work.
