The series taxonomy has never worked like categories. It’s a non-hierarchical taxonomy like tags. You should see that it works just like the tags taxonomy.
With that said, the new editor has taken away the most used series link, which is only available in the old editor.

Yes, I have used the plugin for a while and was aware of this, (non-hierarchical) just used categories as an example for the screenshot
It will be interesting to see if the devs respond
I was wondering if you have plans to update plugins to be compatible with the new editor e.g. ‘Series’ among others?
Can you describe the issue with the plugin? I’ll be happy to correct it and issue an update.
2 images, one with classic editor enabled, (https://screenshots.firefox.com/jF0DdWLkeBWvnKuv/boyneburnettinlandrailtrail.org.au)showing the Series metabox. The other(https://screenshots.firefox.com/EOqPrmAL6uULxlog/boyneburnettinlandrailtrail.org.au) shows the block editor. Unless I am missing something I expected a place for it in the sidebar.
Members content permissions shows at the bottom of the screen
I’ve got a version where the Series metabox appears up on GitHub: https://github.com/justintadlock/series/tree/2.0
I’ll get that updated on WordPress.org today.
Version 2.0.1 is available in the plugin directory now. https://wordpress.org/plugins/series/
“Series” now displays in the editor sidebar, but does not load the already available Series
This image https://screenshots.firefox.com/pJ6QKEPg18Nl9NLS/boyneburnettinlandrailtrail.org.au
shows”Series” with “Add New Series” available but not listing the available Series as the Categories do

There’s a ticket for this, but it’s closed: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/5638
