Last chance to download Options, Structure, and Visionary

As January 31 grows nearer, there’s less and less time left to download the Options, Structure, and Visionary themes. They’ll soon be gone forever.

Just over a month ago, I wrote to tell you that I would be discontinuing the three themes. I’m now trying to give everyone a little extra warning before there’s no time left.

The themes will no longer be available for download after Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time. So, if you ask to get a copy of one of the themes on Sunday, you’re out of luck.

Reasons for discontinuation

If you’ve somehow missed out on all the discussions on this announcement in the last month, I invite you to read my thoughts on the matter:

What does the future hold?

I suppose I’ll have to make new themes to replace these three, right?

Actually, you should be getting a brand spankin’ new child theme for Hybrid at about the same time the others are discontinued — screenshot of Hybrid News.

I also have a photoblog theme in the works that should be released in February. I should also have the Theme Hybrid site redesign up sometime in the next month.

There are new themes on the way. I foresee plenty of exciting things in the near future.

    Hi Justin Tadlock,

As I was eagerly waiting for your upcoming themes, I seem to be among the first few to comment. But I have to say that I am really disappointed when I read this post (Partly, it might be owing to my ignorance of tech stuff).

If I can give you some feedback from the user level… I would have to say that…

I just loved the Options theme and was elated when I read that the brand new HYBRID NEWS child theme is much more than what earlier themes were. But when I saw the screenshot of the theme, I was really disappointed. Old School child theme seemed ages ahead of the upcoming theme’s screenshot.

By news, I imagined that the theme would be able to present maximum possible content on the front page via…

Just Headlines, Excerpts With Thumnails, A Javascript Based Featured Post Section, A Most Debated/Most Read/Recent Posts Section, At Least 3/4 Column Tightly Packed Content Presentation, A Sliding Carousel Of News In Pictures, Presentability Of Latest Posts From At Least 4 Categories, Adsense Ready Features, Square Ad Boxes and a lot of other stuff including any innovative and surising features.

I am sorry to say that by the screenshot, for a non-geek like me… it just is a plain blog with excerpts. I just wish that I am completely mistaken and the theme packs much more than it is showing.

I am absolutely sorry for this negative feedback Justin.

  2. kalcha — Unfortunately, it’s much too late for your opinion now. I’ve given ample opportunity for people to discuss this news theme in the community forums. Plus, you’re giving feedback on a screenshot of one page of a theme.

If you want all of that stuff on your front page, you are free to put it there. I’m much more interested in making clean, functional themes than jam-packing every gizmo in existence onto one page.

Please don’t take this the wrong way. I like user opinion, but if you have ideas, you need to be participating with the other users in the community forums. Otherwise, your voice will never be heard.

  3. Justin, do you plan to release the rest of the results of your user survey (the essay portion of the test)? I’m wondering what the most requested child theme features were.

  4. Brian — I’m sure I’ll get around to it at some point. I’ve read through all the answers. Compiling them in a way that’s presentable is the problem.

Everyone’s answers were so varied that it’ll be hard to represent the entire group, but I’ll at least give some sort of breakdown of it.

    Hi Justin,

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for not being able to participate in the community in advance. I will surely do. Thanks for pointing this ignorant fella in the right direction to be heard.

  6. Bye bye Options. The WP Theme that familiarized me with WP Child themes and made me realize WP Theme designing are not only for geeks.

Oh!! I am sorry. I think that Options Theme is very fantastic and useful. It is very sad that I found it some days ago. I want to customize the layout depend on your help and other forum member. But I will try to do my best.
Please release better free WP themes.

    Regards
    Jake

  8. kalcha — No problem. There was a lot of user feedback on the News theme before I put it together, so the community has essentially molded it.

As always, feel free to voice your ideas in the community forums. I love getting opinions and ideas about the direction of new themes.

TJ — No, you certainly don’t have to be a code geek to design WordPress themes.

jakesong — Don’t worry. The support forums for the Options theme will always be open. The only thing that’s happening is that the theme will no longer be available for download.

I do have a point-and-click-type WordPress theme on the way though that’ll be much easier than using Options.

  9. Justin, do I still get a chance to pay to remove the link from an “old” theme? If yes, where? Thanks and keep up the good work.

hi justin. i want to download the themes. can you send me by email? or send me the link, please…

    Hi
For the past months I have been testing wordpress for a site I am bulding. Beeing a writer, with a little bit of technical knowledge, I found the Options theme to be perfect for me, with everything layed out easily. Since you are removing the theme I been looking a little bit at the Hybrid theme, but don’t get it. It seems to me that you will have to have a lot more programming skills to make this theme look like Options at the front end. Or?

    best

Hi justin, few minutes ago i finished the localization visonary/german.
    Stopping visionary shocked me :-(

After my work with the german translation i think to put the latest version of visionary on my blog with an note that there is no support in the future.

    :-|
    greetings from germany

    Oli

  13. sveino41 — Since you have a copy of the Options theme and it does what you want, you should use it. There’s little point in trying to make Hybrid do something Options is capable of.

pixeltunes — I’ve never said there was “no support in the future.” In fact, I’ve said numerous times that the themes would be supported forever.

  14. Hi Justin, sry for missunderstanding. I’ve never seen the support forever thing. ;-)

Have you seen the folder with the german language pack at http://pixeltunes.de/downloads ?

I try to clear up some tweaks where english and german are not really cooperative together. I gave them an seriously but funny and intuitve touch.

My beta testers are happy with them.

    Ty and cu

  15. ‘I’ve never said there was “no support in the future.” In fact, I’ve said numerous times that the themes would be supported forever.’

I’m running Options Light 0.1, so how does it become compatible with the recent WP update?

I’m waiting to update to 2.7.1…

Btw – Just this past hour I uploaded Hybrid and Hybrid news in case I can’t use Options but only Hybrid is showing up.

I’m getting ‘Hybrid News template is missing’.

  16. Justin, did you email us about this? I found it way too late. Hopefully I still have them some place. With all the hardware crashes I’ve had going on, I’ve lost a few things. :(

Haven’t been in need of support for a while so I’ve not been around

    Thanks

  17. Deleted by the administrator. Please follow the license of the theme. Otherwise, don’t bother commenting and trying to be a part of this community.

  18. Flirtilizer — No, I would never email this type of stuff. That’s what the feed is for — so everyone can follow and keep abreast of updates. This was originally announced over 3 months ago.

  19. Justin,

I understand your reluctance to email people.

However I think it would have been a good idea to email those of us that joined the Theme Club. You have done that in the past when there was a major change in your plan. I like your themes, I love the support and help often beyond the call of duty but I respectively and strongly disagree with this decision regardless of the tone you take in your reply.

I am currently making the changes I need to make so I can switch to your new supported themes. I wasn’t too bothered really by your decision and need for you to do this. I wasn’t too bothered by not getting an email. Your dismissive tone of my question is bothering me.

I think it is a bit arrogant to expect us to follow your blogs. I don’t think I’ve ever been away that long before but this time I was. I had no questions and there was nothing in the past that caused me to think I needed to return on a regular basis.

At this point, I intend to continue using your themes and to remain a member of your theme club but that doesn’t mean I have to be happy about this nor does it mean you have to change.

  20. Flirtilizer — Sorry, I didn’t really think I had a dismissive tone when I was replying. I was just trying to answer your comment. Sorry if it read as arrogance or if it came off the wrong way.

I don’t consider this a change in my plan. These are just a few themes that are no longer being made available for download. This wouldn’t have an effect on existing members that were using one of the three themes as the themes will always be supported.

Honestly, everyone will have different opinions about what they should be emailed or notified about. This is why I try to post major updates here on the Theme Hybrid blog. There’s always an email option if you’d like to stay updated through email.

  21. Justin

You are, I fear, a victim of your own talent. You made such excellent themes as Visionary and Aura and now they are no longer there. The new ones appear much too complex for the likes of me so we are sad, bereft, and, unjustifiably, angry. I miss the 70’s too. I will get over it, but goddamn those themes were good, and the new ones..well I can’t make them work. They look like cr*p and the old ones were so so stylish

    Good luck

    Stuart

    1. Fortunately, both I and many others disagree. The new themes are far less complex than the old ones from both an end user and developer standpoint.

There’ll always be different opinions about design, so I suppose that’s mostly based on opinion. If there are designs you’d like to see, the Ideas forum is always open.
