Child themes?

So, you’re wondering what child themes are?

All child themes need parent themes, right? Child themes are theme releases that add something extra to the original theme.

An example

Let’s suppose you really like the Options theme, but you’d like a little something extra, such as the ability to upload a custom header image from your WordPress dashboard or just a new layout and color scheme.

Child themes to the rescue!

Let’s also suppose I release a super-dooper-cool child theme called Super Mario Bros (just an example). What this child theme might do is add a neat stylesheet that skins your site with a Mario Bros. look.

Then, there might be the added ability to upload a custom header, so you can choose your favorite Mario image and plug it in from your WordPress administration panel. Pretty cool, huh?

Well, there might just be a load of other new features too. I can see some custom widgets coming in the future with this.

Still don’t understand?

No need to fret. Child themes are a good thing.
