To Much CPU

  1. Hi Guys, I had a nice little suprise last night my web host Webhostingpad cancelled my account because it is taking too much load (cpu resources) more than expected on a shared server.
any help addressing this would be helpful.
I do have qiute a few images on the site but I have the majority of images hosted on amazon.
If someone has some advice on how I can resolve this I would really appreciate it.

    1. What are you running on your server? http://www.globalevangelists.com/? Anything else?
    2. What is your traffic like?

Unless your answers to those questions really surprises me, then I'd say that host is just no good. OR you've got something malicious going on behind the scenes.

  2. Images are not going to cause you to use cpu. A bloated/corrupt database, poorly coded plugins, or an exploited website or hosting account could.

Tracking down the culprit in a shared hosting environment can be tricky

A few thing I would try are:
    1. Optimize your database tables. This can be done via phpMyAdmin or using the DBManager plugin.

    2. A huge number of entries in the wp_options table. I recently saw 28,000 entries in that table on a site that had been suspended for similar reasons. The majority of the entries were left over feed entries. Normally they get set to autoload = no but most of them in this case were still set to autoload so WP was loading all that useless junk on every page load.

    3. Cull the plugins. It's hard to tell which ones might be causing problems, though. I'd check your site's error log for obvious problems. Anything that can be handled without a plugin should be ditched and anything that has not been updated or maintained you should consider removing or replacing.

    4. Check for vulnerabilities/compromises. If your site or hosting account has been hacked it's possible that something the hackers are using is causing the cpu usage. Sometimes the answer is to move the site to a new host.

This is over simplified of course. But perhaps it will get you pointed in the right direction?

  3. Thanks,
I thought it was a little surprising myself, traffic is not that great and I only have a couple of other sites that I barely even touch, and they get almost no traffic.
as far as anything malicious goes, any ideas on how would I find that out, nothing seems to be showing in any analytic's data.

  4. This might help - http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/exploit-scanner/

If it's your hosting that's compromised, though it's a different story and it's sometimes easier to get new hosting than to close up the hole.

    Thanks.

  8. Ok I will start right away then check back with my host to see if they are seeing any improvement.
I just need to decide what I don't need.

  9. Justin, what would be your top 10 plugins?

  13. btw, yust in case some one else is on my same issue, i found out that the plug in "Yet Another Related Posts Plugin" was doing 24 queries on the home page of hibrid news, while on a post page is doing only 5 queries, you may want to disable that one.

  14. Related post plugins do now work well with wp 2.8 within any theme, I know from experience.

greet box does not play well with hybrid nor does xml maps

to many tabs can drag you down

Pretty link is incredibly resource heavy and will bog your dashboard

broken link checker is also resource heavy

Tweet this can cause cpu issues when loading pages if you're spiking from twitter when you're running high in resources, it's easy to go from 5 to 30 even with 10-15 loads at one time.

One last thing, I know your other sites are hardly used, but, if they're not up to date and have been exploited (given they're wordpress) this could be your problem as well.

all of these together are the perfect storm to cpu issues, load each of your plugins one at a time off peak hours, and reload the page one at a time, it is time consuming, but honestly, it will save you a lot of frustration.

I assure you you will see a change in your load times with deactivating related posts virtually immediately, I switched to contextually related post in the end and love it.

One more thing, if you're loading related posts to feeds, this can drag you down if you have a lot of readers by feedreader.

  15. Justin,

I saw you use Download Monitor. I use this on a few sites and have noticed that it creates invalid CSS? Do you fix the style sheet that comes with it?

I've looked at it and the invalid css it creates is for the admin page, but it must load a single stylesheet for the entire site, that seems really frustrating.

  17. That's strange, this is the frontpage of my site, with no downloads availible.

  18. I`ve visited your site sometimes and always felt you loaded too much whizzes and bells. You might want to focus on what really matters.

  19. Me John? Or Jeremy? It's unclear, but my site is pretty stripped down.

  20. That would be globalevangelist ;)

  21. Any Suggestions?
    ;-)

  22. @Sooner, you wrote that the XML sitemaps plugin doesn't play well with Hybrid - how so? And Justin didn't list it as something he used.

How do you guys generate XML site maps, or don't you? They seem to be something the search engines like to have...

  24. @Ricky: I use "Google XML Sitemaps" and have not had any issues. Currently running WP 2.8.6 + Hybrid News + 20 odd plugins. "Google XML Sitemaps" generates a fresh map once every 24 hours which takes between 5 and 7 secs to generate - other than that I don't see how it could impact CPU. The plugin is well supported and continues to keep up with the pace of WP.

  25. @Ricky: I just read Justin's response about not using a Sitemap generator. I agree with Justin's line of reasoning - based on what I see indexed of my site at Google - I'm not really sure how much importance Google actually places on the supplied Sitemap. I suspect that it gets used but then goes ahead and checks all else regardless.
