Help with image auto-resizing of feature image in slider (Hybrid News)

   I confess that I'm totally in the dark as to how the image attached to the post gets resized and displayed in the feature slider (or, for that matter, how the thumbnails are created for the excerpt posts).

   My problem is that the author doing most of the posting on one of our sites is *not* very good with image resizing. It wasn't too terrible with Structure, where there were just the small thumbnails. Occasionally, a head would get cut off, and I'd go in and create a custom thumbnail and reload it. However, at the larger size that's displayed in the feature (230 x 230), I'm finding that most of the images are getting stretched out of proportion rather than cropped. How can I prevent this?

   Also, any explanation about how this all takes place behind the scenes would be greatly appreciated.

   Thanks so much, Justin! I've read both articles, and that's a HUGE help.

   Now, if I'm understanding this correctly, to achieve my objective of having a properly proportioned 230 x 230 "large thumbnail" for lack of a better term to be used in the slider on the front page, while allowing the rectangular image to appear within the post, I would need to:

   a. insert the rectangular image just as normal now, but, in addition...
   b. create the square "large thumbnail" image and upload it as an attachment (but *not* insert it), and also
   c. create a filter to tell the front page slider to grab the "large thumbnail" attachment rather than the first image inserted into the post.

   Am I getting it, or do I need to go get more coffee? :)
