Best Cache Plugin

  1. Can Anyone give any advice or recommendations on a good caching plugin.
I am currently on a shared hosting account so some access is restricted for certain plugins.
    Cheers

  2. @Jeremy
I've heard a lot of good talk about:

    WP-Cache: http://www.google.dk/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=3&ved=0CBIQFjAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.org%2Fextend%2Fplugins%2Fwp-cache%2Finstallation%2F&ei=vXn5SsaQAoGA4gaK-Zm8Cw&usg=AFQjCNHUo7j1OgNR3069FWa-0SA831CN3g&sig2=y_OBOBfaAn7ZfMRtkxkGuw

    WP Super Cache: http://www.google.dk/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=2&ved=0CAoQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.org%2Fextend%2Fplugins%2Fwp-super-cache%2F&ei=vXn5SsaQAoGA4gaK-Zm8Cw&usg=AFQjCNEFx5m5xxjiE3e3fip9fzcNhM84Bg&sig2=lCs5BfdCsMdTTlxIwpUByg

There's also an interesting (new?) cache plugin:
    http://www.w3-edge.com/wordpress-plugins/w3-total-cache/

  3. WP Cache is no longer updated (not since 2007)and I would NOT suggest you use it!

I use WP Super Cache (better link) - http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-super-cache/ - I really want to say that WP should be FINE without a cache, but ... I get hit by the SlashDot/Digg effect often enough that even optimizing my VPS to an inch of it's life wasn't helping my CPU spikes.

I've heard interesting things about Hyper Cache: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/hyper-cache/

    Get a list here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tags/caching

    Experiment! :)

  4. Cool thanks guys,

  5. I've got a lot of experience using WP Super Cache and it does a really good job. Just read about W3 Total Cache and know that yoast.com uses that. They are a highly trafficed site and very WordPress konwledgable.

Check out their latest post on their server configuration: http://yoast.com/wordpress-hosting/ I found it helpful.

  6. I do not like wp-super-cache, though I've used it when I've had to.

    My reasons:

    1) The use of the Widget Logic is finicky with cacheing.
    2) Also, wp-super-cache sometimes locks up my site(s).

  7. Like Wardeh I also had some bad experiences with WP Super Cache.

This might be my own fault, I mean Donncha O Caoimh is developing it, and he's one of the main drivers of WP MU. :-)

  8. I've been using W3 Total Cache on a blog which has around 1200 visitors a day. And I am running it on shared hosting, a cheap hosting plan, something like 20$/year. Pretty good, much better than WP Super Cache.

  9. I have W3 Total Cache and WP Super Cache (not on the same site obviously) and while liking both a lot, I personally like WP Super Cache somewhat better, not necessarily for its performance, in which a properly (!) configured W3 performs staggeringly well, but because WP Super Cache simply plays better with a host of other "big" plugins, of which most notably the WP Mobile Pack and Bad Behavior (especially that last one) stand out. Perhaps that's a difference determined by a (much) longer user experience, which over time may cancel out, but right now that's my take.

And if youŕe really strapped for resources because of massive traffic, a server (service) upgrade is always the most stable and preferable solution, no matter which plugin you use. Thing is, both those cache plugins can be finicky; depending on your server you can experience more hiccups with one or the other. Still, both are really magnificent ways to deal with occasional (!) traffic spikes, so AFAIC, just use either and play with it, see which one works best for you. Again, if your traffic is high enough, not even an "ideal" caching solution will clear the bottleneck of limited server resources.

  11. Looks promising, but as the author notes:

WARNING: chances are that the plugin will not work when PHP safe mode is enabled and web server is operated by a different user than owns the files.

I stressed the last part, because there are quite a few shared web hosters out there that have that "feature." In those cases especially, WP Super Cache and W3 Total Cache offer a better fit.

Different caching methods respond to different application scenarios; it's the other plugins that one has in use on the site which tend to drive the choice when picking a suitable caching method. Put differently, I don't think there are "bad" or "low-efficiency" cache plugins around, just different ones. Just like Formula One racing: having the fastest car not necessarily equals the most reliable one, and championships are often an endurance battle.

This was an issue with *my* host and WP-Super-Cache.

  14. I also use w3 Total Cache, but it has problems to minify/combine javascript and css in hybrid child themes :-/
