I've been using Hybrid News for some time now, but in it's near default form. Really liking Hybrid News, but wanting something a little more unique, I decided to build a custom child theme of Hybrid (using Hybrid News as my base).
Overall, I'm pretty happy with the result. One of my readers commented "awesome site. Easy to read - not too many eyecandy distractions, etc." Nonetheless, have a look and let me know what you think!

a couple of things/suggestions
your top nav is not so easy to read color on top of black (not important just my pov)
also why don't you track your 'download my cv' with a plugin? say download-monitor just an idea, that way you can monitor the downloads easily

I'm assuming you changed the animation on the cycle plugin. Good to know that's possible. I want the link to images on posts, so I'll probably base my design on Hybrid News for that reason.

Yes, the annimation can be changed by modifying the jquery.functions.js file in the library directory.
I'm still on the fence about possibly releasing as a child theme. I'm not sure I did some of my modifications correctly (namely the social icons on the top nav bar). I suppose if theres enough interest in it I may consider releasing it?
