Options theme changes: Your opinions « Community

Welcome, guest!

Feel free to read the blog, browse for themes, or join the club.

The community forums are currently being phased out. At the end of February or early March 2012, you will no longer be able to post here. This is because the entire site is being restructured. Please use the main forums for discussions.

Options theme changes: Your opinions

  1. These changes are about the upcoming version 1.4.

Some of you have followed Options through some major changes since its release in February. I'm thinking of making one last major change.

Those of you that have tried out the Hybrid theme have seen my interest in page templates. I think page templates have been overlooked in the WordPress community.

    My proposal

Move the home page stuff to a separate page template.

    Why?

    Well, for several reasons:

    * It'll allow me to more easily make several page templates, such as a Features Gallery-only template that'll pull attachment images into your gallery.

    * It will allow those that want a normal blog to more easily set up a normal blog without having to learn all the ins and outs of the system.

    * I can more easily set up various functions that can be better extracted to pull from anywhere, such as adding a features gallery wherever you want instead of just the home page.

    * Options can be used as what many of you call a CMS with this move.

Plus, creating a page template is super easy, and you can set the "Home Template" as your home page.

  2. And, if we do move to more of a page-template system, what page templates would you want to see the most? What I mean by this question is what individual home-page features would you like to see get their own page template?

    Features Gallery? Of course.

    Any others?

Also, I'm planning on having Options 1.4 out this week in preparation for WP 2.7. So, don't wait around with your answers! ;)

  3. I don't understand page templates - everything looks the same to me. So if it's good for you or makes development more easy and doesn't change the looks and possibilities of 'my' website then by all means.

Flexibility is good, especially if it's standardised.

  4. A page template that consist of two or maybe three columns?

  5. I think I'm backing off a few of these ideas for version 1.4. I think it'd be better to get a stable release that works with WordPress 2.7 first.

A page template that consist of two or maybe three columns?

This is definitely in the realm of possibility.

  6. Here's a separate features gallery template that would pull attachment images uploaded to the page:

  7. How about a way to change theme colors and add a title image from the dashboard. I like child themes and all but it would be great to be able to customize title colors without having to tweak a child theme.

  8. This is something I've went over a few times before actually.

Unfortunately, it's something I'll never (probably never) do. If anything, I want to REMOVE dashboard options from the Options theme.

I'm of the opinion that if a person can't manage to customize something as basic as color from their stylesheet, then they shouldn't be running their own site. Learning CSS is a basic webmaster skill — and yes, everyone that runs their own site is a webmaster.

Not that I don't appreciate the idea, it's just something I won't budge on.

Now, the ability to add a header image is something I've toyed with in the Aura child theme and may bring that into other child themes in the future.

I'll just stop here though because this is the wrong thread to discuss this in. We're talking about the changes mentioned above.

  9. Bring it on justin,

Gallery page template would be a nice addition. But can you provide a option while writing a post, which when selected will let it get displayed in gallery template (like a flag).

    regards
    Thinkjayant

  10. What will be happening is that it will be displaying your attached images for that particular page, so there won't be a need for any additional options.

  11. unclear how we change the page template i dont understand, i have been searching for 3 days man :(

  12. Definitely a sitemap. this one is good: http://www.revolutiontwo.com/demo/church.html
Just needs a built in call for the Google xml sitemap plugin. That would be great.

I think page templates are a great idea. More opportunities to have just what you want
    without support ;-)

  13. Since the Options theme will be discontinued, I'm going to shut this thread down to avoid confusion:
