Official ThemeHybrid.com site ideas thread « Community

Welcome, guest!

Feel free to read the blog, browse for themes, or join the club.

The community forums are currently being phased out. At the end of February or early March 2012, you will no longer be able to post here. This is because the entire site is being restructured. Please use the main forums for discussions.

Official ThemeHybrid.com site ideas thread

  1. As most of you are well aware, the site has been redesigned recently (I'll be updating the community forum design shortly). But, I wanted to open up a more ongoing thread about things around the site that could benefit everyone.

I'm, by far, no perfect designer. Things that make total sense to me might confuse others. Getting around the site might be super easy for me (I do know it like the back of my hand), but it might not be so easy for you.

I've finally moved the entire site design to my Subversion repository, so it'll be easier for me to track and make changes when necessary.

    What this topic is about

This topic is just to have an open-ended discussion about the site's design, structure, navigation, and so on. In other words, it's about ThemeHybrid.com itself.

    Things to look out for:

    • Are things hard to find?
    • Something hard to read?
    • Broken links, images, etc.?
    • Something not working in your browser (note I do not support IE6 with this site's design)?

Of course, I'm still working out all of the kinks for the new design.

    Certain things can't be done.

I'm mostly thinking about the forums in this regard (both support and community). There are more powerful forums I could use, but I'm running bbPress because I want to support the entire WordPress project. Plus, I think it works well in a support-forum environment, especially since it's so lightweight.

So, "features" for the support forum are pretty much at its limit until the software matures a bit more.

    What I'll be doing

I'll let this thread run its course for a while before implementing anything new (unless there's a major bug, of course). I'll probably always be making tweaks and such to the site (the theme download and tutorial pages need cleaning up right now).

Once there's enough ideas, I'll periodically go through them and make changes if I think they'll benefit all users of the site.

  2. Thanks for the open invitation to give you some feedback.

I think it would be nice if the ideas forum was integrated into the regular forum with it's own category of course. I think users are seldom guest here as opposed to the regular forum. That could engage more users to some of the great ideas there are.

I also think it would be nice to see an upcoming features list. Maybe also with links to the threads where the idea has been discussed.

You could also go the more bling bling way and add a poll and users online plugin, but maybe that would be a bit much.

Also a note to your writings on justintadlock.com I remember when you launched Themehybrid you said that now you would have the possibility to write about something else than WordPress on your personal blog. But you still write a lot about it over there. It would be nice if you posted the WordPress relevant stuff here as well. Especially now that you've got a blog section here.

  3. I was hoping to get some more feedback before replying to anyone. ;)

I think it would be nice if the ideas forum was integrated into the regular forum with it's own category of course.

It was easier to separate the exclusive and normal members this way, but I've got a few ideas about making it easier to find things. We need more participation here in the community forums.

I also think it would be nice to see an upcoming features list.

I also think this would be cool, but I don't really have a list of things I'm doing. I usually come up with new ideas every day, but then I chuck them out the window a few days later. I don't want to get people's hopes up about something, then let them down by not following through.

Well, WordPress is pretty much my life. ;) I'll try to write some ThemeHybrid-specific WP stuff here, and keep the general WP stuff on my blog.

  4. I've also just changed the front page stuff around a bit to make it more dynamic. So, everyone, depending on what level membership you might have, will see a more helpful message.

  5. I`d like to see this one finished: http://themehybrid.com/themes/hybrid/stylesheets :)

I also believe that the trendy shocking big red button for registered users are too shocking big, red and trendy, and could be removed/changed and replaced with latest posts from the forum...

  6. @JohnMyrstad

    I just finished updating:
    http://themehybrid.com/themes/hybrid/stylesheets

It should be a good starting point, which I'll probably add to over time.

  7. It might be a good idea to add the search to the sidebar in the forums, because it's hard to find for new users.

    Here's great inspiration: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/12/04/designing-the-holy-search-box-examples-and-best-practices

  8. Yeah, it's on my list of things to do.

  9. There's a little error in the documentation here: http://themehybrid.com/themes/hybrid/styling-content

The pullquote examples should end with /blockquote and not /p

  10. I second the search function idea.

  11. I third the Search function. Needed! Saves duplicate posts etc.

  12. We currently have a search in the pulldown at the top of the page. I'll likely add a second one sometime in the future.
