More Hybrid plugins? « Community

Welcome, guest!

Feel free to read the blog, browse for themes, or join the club.

The community forums are currently being phased out. At the end of February or early March 2012, you will no longer be able to post here. This is because the entire site is being restructured. Please use the main forums for discussions.

More Hybrid plugins?

  1. As most of you know, I recently made a plugin called Hybrid Hook, which allows you to input custom content almost anywhere on your site straight from your WordPress dashboard:
    http://themehybrid.com/archives/2008/12/hybrid-hook-wordpress-plugin

It's a Hybrid-theme-only plugin, which uses Hybrid's built-in hook system to do some neat things.

    The next plugin

My latest idea is for a complete multimedia box. See the working version of the settings page:
    http://themehybrid.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/mm-box-design.png

The idea is that you can set up images, video, or custom content to show wherever you want. It'll be a while before I release it because i've got a few other things to work on first.

Would you like to see more Hybrid-specific plugins?

I could build a lot of this into the Hybrid backend, but then it would become another Options, which is something I'd rather stay away from. I want the Hybrid settings to be all about content/information.

Plugins could be a neat way to extend the theme without putting a lot of messy code within the theme files itself.

I know a lot of you aren't advanced coders, so it just makes sense to give you a little of the power that more advanced users can do without a plugin.

I have quite a few ideas about what type of plugins would be extremely useful to add, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. If you all really like the plugin idea, I'll continue creating them. Also, do you have any ideas about ways to extend Hybrid? I'd love to hear them.

  2. Another plugin I have in mind is for those that just don't understand the child theme concept but want to create their own style. I'm calling it Hybrid Styles at the moment.

Basically, it would allow you to create a custom style from the backend. You could pick and choose which of the stylesheets already included with the theme you want to use.

There'd also be an area to to use a custom stylesheet and an area to directly input custom CSS rules.

  3. Hybrid Styles sounds like a really good idea. A lot of the appeal of Wordpress is that you can get up and running without getting your hands dirty. I'm sure a higher proportion of people here are pretty competent (or better) with CSS, PHP and an assorted array of TLAs but I'm also sure the majority of people using Wordpress know little about CSS and PHP. Making life easier for the end users is always a great idea. The trick is to balance usability with power, as I'm sure you know well.

I'll be putting my site together at the end of January (after my 1st decent holiday in 6 years) and I'll be using Hybrid to do it. I haven't seen anything that comes close, apart from maybe Thematic but I never really warmed to it. It doesn't feel as bleeding edge to me as Hybrid.

As for plugin suggestions, JQuery seems to be the shiny thing today. I like the show/hide text type tools. Perhaps something along those lines?

Thanks for all your endeavours, Justin

Justin - I have to say you are the bomb!!! I have a an idea - but I am going to wait until after Christmas to be able to articulate it correctly - too much going on to be able to spend much time online until the new year.
