Hybrid Hook: Version 0.2 - Widgets? « Community

Welcome, guest!

Feel free to read the blog, browse for themes, or join the club.

The community forums are currently being phased out. At the end of February or early March 2012, you will no longer be able to post here. This is because the entire site is being restructured. Please use the main forums for discussions.

Hybrid Hook: Version 0.2 - Widgets?

  1. I have a question that needs quick attention. A new plugin or version of a plugin is coming out soon. I just wanted some last-minute feedback.

I've been plugging away at a plugin based off the original Hybrid Hook plugin. This new plugin is completely widgetized.

    Hybrid Hook

If you're unfamiliar with this plugin, it basically allows you to add content from a control panel anywhere on your site using Hybrid's action hooks. You can add XHTML, PHP, JavaScript, whatever.

    I'd say it's pretty cool.

    Hybrid Hook Widgets

Hybrid Hook is cool, but it's still a bit limiting. What I've been doing is taking all of the input boxes from the original plugin and turning them into widget areas.

Some pros for the new version:

    • It's widget ready! 'nough said. ;)
    • Ability to interface with other plugins like Widget Logic and Widget Context.
    • Ability to use Hybrid's built-in widgets all over the place.

It's much cooler than the original.

    My question to you

Should the new version just be called Hybrid Hook: Version 0.2 or should I make it a completely separate plugin with a new name?

I like the idea of just making this version 0.2 because, when this is released, the original Hybrid Hook will be pretty much obsolete.

  2. Put widget in the name. It will give the plugin some more attention, and it will reflect the change, even though 0.2 is probably politically correct since you build on 0.1. ( Is there a automatic upgrade from within WP, or a upgrade message ? )

I`d go for a name including widget to emphasis:

    # Ability to interface with other plugins like Widget Logic and Widget Context.
    # Ability to use Hybrid's built-in widgets all over the place.

    Hybrid Widget Hooks

Most Hybrid users will be more interested in the widgets term than the slightly more obscure hook term.

  3. btw: - Sounds very interesting. I like the phrase

    all over the place

  4. The more I think about it, the more I think this should be a separate plugin.

Now, I just need to come up with a name. I've been using "Hybrid Hook Widgets," but I prefer to use no more than two words. If nothing else, I'll just stick with what I have.

Is there a automatic upgrade from within WP, or a upgrade message ?

I plan on adding this to the plugin repository for WP, so upgrading should be simple.

  5. I was thinking about upgrade from Hybrid Hook 0.1, which if yes, would give an argument for keeping the name...

"Hybrid Hook Widgets" aint bad at all - it does have the 3 important keywords and with the new functionality it does what it says - it hooks widgets in Hybrid. ;)

  6. The only way the upgrade would be available like that would be to keep the name Hybrid Hook.

I think I'm pretty set on Hybrid Hook Widgets now though for the same reasons you've already mentioned. Plus, some HTML is not controllable when using widgets like the containing widget <div>, so it might be a good idea to continue both as separate plugins. Hybrid Hook allows complete HTML control but Hybrid Hook Widgets offers easier access to Hybrid's built-in widgets and any other widgets people have running.

  7. Well, it's decided. I'm going with "Hybrid Hook Widgets". It'll be available here sometime in the next day or so:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/hybrid-hook-widgets

  8. That`s nice. For end-users this is the best solution, since we now have more options, and if Hybrid Hook 1.0 needs an upgrade its easy upgradable.

Since you are focusing on hooks these days, maybe its a convenient time to document filters ?
    http://themehybrid.com/themes/hybrid/filters ;)

( btw: I have seen some negative comments about the "placeholder" on Thesis affiliate sites )

  9. I just pushed this on the plugin repository:

    Introduction post coming soon.

  10. @John
I'll update that filters tutorial soon.
