Focus on pages: Hybrid child theme concept « Community

Welcome, guest!

Feel free to read the blog, browse for themes, or join the club.

The community forums are currently being phased out. At the end of February or early March 2012, you will no longer be able to post here. This is because the entire site is being restructured. Please use the main forums for discussions.

Focus on pages: Hybrid child theme concept

  1. I've been knocking out the layout for a new child theme. The focus of the theme will be a bit more like what you see here at Theme Hybrid. I get several requests for the theme used on this site, so I thought I play around with a few ideas. This is what I've come up with:
    http://themehybrid.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/hybrid-child-page-focus.png

I don't have a design other than the layout, so this might become a starter child theme if I can't come up with something. If you have any design ideas, feel free to share them.

    Breaking down the layout

The header area is pretty standard, so there's nothing new there.

The featured area is actually just the title and content of a page, so this would be a page template.

Below that is six sections, which I think I'll probably make a widget area. Or, it might be two widget areas (left and right columns). The gray box to the far right is the standard Primary widget area.

And, of course, we have the footer. I've never done a five-widget footer, so I'm toying with this idea.

    Ideas? Suggestions?

This is at a very early stage, so there's plenty of time to add your feedback.

  2. S3 jQuery slider for Big fat Image.

  3. Footer:

    Sliding Panel under footer:

  4. Header:

Different header for frontpage and pages/posts.

Sometimes you have to put much emphasis on logo/branding on frontpage, but not that much on pages/posts. Body class css ?

Layered approach to the header to use transparency.

  5. Menu/Navigation:

Menu bar full width, not competing with logo when it comes to horizontal space, as in your design mockup.

Optionally superfish dropdown style and nav-bar style.

Right floated widget for sub pages nav on pages/posts.
    Breadcrumb on pages/posts.

  6. Below that is six sections, which I think I'll probably make a widget area. Or, it might be two widget areas (left and right columns).

Why not upper and lower ? That makes more sense to me. People will run into problems with different heights of the widget areas with left/right, and left/right areas may be done within a upper or lower area.

( I`ve seen a LOT of designwise bad use of too many easy accessible widgets in home content areas in WP themes. Looks good with showcase content, but bad when users put real content in. )

Big Headline area is that the-content ?

  7. Search

No search box in mockup. Search box must be included, either in navbar or in header.
If the new search plugin proves to be good, customizable templates supporting it will be a big +.

  8. Theme type:

Starter theme first and then one or two graphic ones.

One light/white/fresh with subtle design and slick design of box borders, and then one with more/stronger color and contrast.

  9. I never seem to lose use for a second navigation element at the top. Could be an option within a widget for top nav zone.

And, since this was sparked by what's here at Theme Hybrid, I've run across a number of comments about implementing your drop down member area. Add this as an option.

Use as little color as possible in the child theme to make it easier for users to complete styling with their own customized color schemes.

    • More improve in each section headline
Below each section headline excerpt, there are list title post in each section, maybe 2 or three title post. I think it's make more option to user, to direct view the short archive for each section. It's make more helps for user in news website category. I know some of how company media worked. For local media, there are producing more 100 posts per day.
    • Thumbnail excerpt at category template or frontpage template
Square thumbnail image not in left aligned the excerpt, but above excerpt and below or above the post title, so the image more width.
    • Make some different view at category template
Maybe adding option to make some sticky/feature post in every category, or the last post will be feature post automatically. Or make it two columns with last post excerpt in full content width at top.
