I just completed a complete redesign of my site BonFX.com using Skeleton. Very cool, I must say once again.

From Photoshop to done was only a matter of hours. This was so easy. I had to edit some CSS to handle tweaks to the layout, but most changes were CSS for color and image reference.

One of the pages, a reference for an iPhone app about fonts, was my first 'no widgets' page. I had to ad some page-specific CSS to get rid of certain elements. I'm not sure it was the "right" way to do this, but it worked perfect.

The site is still messy in IE6, but I don't think I care whatsoever.

Do check out the iPhone app page while you are there!

Strongbridgefunding.com is my very 1st site. It is built using Skeleton as a starting point.

Just a month ago I knew nothing about CSS, PHP, or Wordpress for that matter. Somehow I volunteered to build a blog, and a website. I spent the last 3 weeks working on this site full-time. I must say I learned more in the past moth that in the whole previous year. Before I found Hybrid theme I tried thesis and ran into some issues/limitations.

The blank canvas of the skeleton child theme is what helped me figure out wordpress and CSS.

http://strongbridgefunding.com

I will be extremely grateful to anyone who would take the time to critique my work.

Thank you all!

Ok I just installed Hybrid, but I have no idea how to tweak it.... In fact, I really do not know how to do much in Word Press.... yesterday I spent quite a few hours trying to do a tutorial on making your own themes. But I gave up after the index page step....

SO, I want to know if in the paid section - IS there tutorials that will help me to get up and running and tweaking of Hybrid - I will probably install Hybrid News as well.... I want a front page that has lots of sections.... But I need help which assumes you know nothing.....

I have worked with blogger for several years (even at tweaking / making my own template changes).... so I do know a little bit....

Thank you for your help!

Justin Tadlock on "Hybrid and BuddyPress"

I wanted to open up an official topic that deals specifically with the Hybrid theme and BuddyPress because this can be a huge topic in and of itself.

What we'll be discussing here is ideas about the best way to integrate BuddyPress features and theme templates into the Hybrid theme.

Some rules for Hybrid

Integration cannot affect WP users that don't use BuddyPress.

BuddyPress needs to be as separate from the core framework as possible to avoid as much extra PHP running for non-BuddyPress users.

That's basically it at this point. Hybrid is a WordPress theme first and foremost. It's purpose isn't to be a BuddyPress theme, but one of its goals can be for complete integration with BuddyPress.

Some ideas

I'm thinking of making a separate
/buddypress
folder inside of
/hybrid
. Hybrid would then check to see if BuddyPress is installed before loading any of those files.

Everything about BuddyPress would live inside of the
/buddypress
directory, including templates. I don't really want to clutter the root
/hybrid
folder with a lot of extra templates and folders.

Where I stand

There's a reason Hybrid is good at what it's used for — I've been using and developing with WordPress for years. I've spent a few days, at most, playing around with BuddyPress. Diving straight into this thing without a lot of feedback, usage, and tinkering around with the code won't work well.

I need to understand the system and how the system is used before making Hybrid compatible with BuddyPress.

ETA?

I don't want to set any kind of timeframe on this. There's just too much involved to even begin to start thinking about when it'll be ready.

Your turn

Offer any feedback, ideas, links to other BP themes, documentation, and whatever else you feel would help.

I wanted to give myself a bit of a break before getting into discussing Hybrid 0.8 There was such a change between the 0.6 and 0.7 branch that I needed to cool off for a bit.

But, it's now time to start thinking about version 0.8. I'll start off by listing some of the things I'd like to see, and I hope we have as much input as we did in the 0.7, which ended up with 149 posts.

Page template name changes

In 0.7, I deprecated all the file names of the custom page templates. What I'd like to do is finish the template hierarchy change by making all page templates begin with
page-
. This makes things much more organized.

For example, the
archives.php
file would be changed to
page-archives.php
, the
biography.php
template file would be changed to
page-biography.php
, and so on.

I want people to be able to recognize these as page templates.

Full support of custom post type templates

WP 3.0 is getting massive changes for support of custom post types. I'd like to make sure all post types follow the same pattern as posts and pages do in the template hierarchy. So, the hierarchy would be:

{$post_type}-{$custom}.php
{$post_type}-{$post->post_name}.php
{$post_type}-{$post->ID}.php
{$post_type}.php

This also goes along with the name changes of the page templates.

Atomic hooks allow more than one argument

Right now, only
apply_atomic()
allows a single argument (other than the name of the hook).
do_atomic()
takes in no extra arguments. I'd like to be able to add any number of arguments to either.

If this is all Greek to you, don't worry. This is mostly a developer feature.

Change the byline and entry meta to shortcodes

In 0.7, I introduced the ability to use shortcodes in the byline and entry meta filters, but the default is still a bunch of jumbled up PHP code. Much of this has to do with preserving legacy functions.

But, I'd like to change the functions to shortcodes by default. This helps out with cutting back on code and makes it easier to translate.

Removal of Tabular Data extension

This extension (located in
/library/extensions/tabular-data.php
) was a legacy file carried over from the earliest days of Hybrid and hasn't been loaded by default in several versions.

The only person I know that actually uses it is me, and I don't even need it anymore.

Continue making the code lighter and more efficient

As with all releases, I want to cut back as much as possible while still offering the same or more functionality.

Custom designed child theme on top of Hybrid. Site uses WPMu.

A lot of work has gone into this custom theme. We have implemented complex theme settings configuration allowing the admin to control where the feature posts (and how many) on the home page and top category pages come from.

A good number of plugins giving extra functionality like Facebook connect, MailChimp integration, ajax login, email and print articles, rate articles etc.

Evolu is one of New Zealand's top skincare brands and the aim of the blogzine is to extend and enrich their interaction with their customers and community.

The site is just about to be "launched" so there are a few content tweaks to be done.

Opinions and feedback welcome.

WordPress 2.9 makes developing custom post_type plugins much easier. Still to hard for me, although I would develop this myself if I had the knowledge. My idea is an editor to create new post types and associated post editors. WordPress offers post, page and attachment as standard post types. I need more post types. Some post types I'd personally like to add for some of my websites:

book (bibliography)

video

camera review

event (event calendar)

classified ad (I don't like the hacky classified ad themes and plugins that are currently available)

faq

product

wiki

photo

etc.

I know some plugins are already doing this job. I even tried all of them, but after reading what Justin Tadlock wrote about this I decided to stop using them.
Existing plugins doing this job in a "wrong" way:

Pods CMS

Magic Fields

Flutter

Anyone else interested in a plugin like this? Anyone interested in developing it?

We launched it about a week ago, so it's a little slim on content. Also, much of the fun stuff (pictures of the kids) is password protected, and only accessible by parents. That's something we decided early on...

I built this site by creating a child theme for Hybrid. It's been several years since I used WordPress, and not only was the concept of child themes completely new to me, WordPress itself has changed drastically since I last used it.

There's still more work to be done on this site, but overall I think it turned out quite well, and the staff and parents really like it.

First... I have no idea how I got along before now without firebug and YSlow.... especially the css assistance I am getting from firebug....

YSlow reports when javascript loads from the head. One of the recommendations is for them to load at the bottom of the page. Hybrid News w/ the
front-page.php
template loads 5 scripts... 4 at the top and one at the bottom.

2 at the top are base WP
2 at the top are Hybrid News
1 at bottom is Hybrid

Jscript files block parallel file downloads on the host from which they are being drawn. Since most folks are only serving WP from a single host this can present a pretty good lag... In the case I outline, it's 5 separate HTTP requests and each of them has to be served serially.

Without getting into what each one does, dependencies, et al. Does it not make sense to keep an eye on the number of script loads and where they load in mind when coding? And shouldn't we also be mindful of how many scripts we call and consider consolidating the scripts? At least at the WP level, the Hybrid level, and the Child Theme level....?

Maybe WP won't combine theirs, and Hybrid only has a single addition, but Hybrid News has two... apparently both required for the slider function on the home page.... Should at least these two files not be combined into a single script file?

I'm not a jscript programmer, so I don't know.

But it seems to me that proceeding from the assumption that fewer HTTP requests is generally better. Also, it would seem to be better that jscript should be allowed to block parallel downloading when it is least noticeable to the user.

It does appear that in most circumstances the JavaScript files are loading after all the CSS files.... which I understand (now) is a good thing.

I'm sure that far smarter folks than I have already addressed this, but as I learn more about this stuff I come up with questions and the questions bug me to such a degree that I can't focus on continuing to learn... ;)

BOTTOM LINE: Should we not look at combining script files and figure out which ones can and what order to load them at the bottom of the <body> section of each page?

PS: Couldn't decide what to TAG this post with...

I'm just putting the finishing touches on http://greenj.am - it has been build with Hybrid using the skeleton theme as a starting point.

There are a few interesting things going on, as posts come in from various feeds they get sent to OpenCalais where they get tagged by who or what is talked about. I then put the tags into about 12 custom taxonomies (people, places etc) and the posts can all be browsed by these tags.

I'd be interested on peoples views about the site and how it works. There is more functionality to come, particularly with stats and views of what topics are popular.

Cheers,

In our discussion about making money from Theme Hybrid, one great idea was to offer a PSD to child theme service.

I wanted to open a topic that deals specifically with this idea. So, the floor is completely open.

Nothing has to be set in stone. We just need to go ahead and get the ideas rolling in, so we can make this happen.

I've been using Hybrid News for some time now, but in it's near default form. Really liking Hybrid News, but wanting something a little more unique, I decided to build a custom child theme of Hybrid (using Hybrid News as my base).

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the result. One of my readers commented "awesome site. Easy to read - not too many eyecandy distractions, etc." Nonetheless, have a look and let me know what you think!

I've been toying around with the idea of creating a forum that runs completely off WordPress. This makes it theme-able and allows you to use all of the WP functions within your forum. Plus, you can use any plugins you want alongside it because it would be based solely on WP.

Here's something I put together this evening using WP 3.0's new custom post types:
http://justintadlock.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/forum-idea.png

It's just a basic front page like what you see here on the Theme Hybrid forums.

Runs off of...

It took only a few things to make this possible:

Custom post type called "Forum Topic."

Two custom taxonomies called "Topic Tags" and "Forums".

A custom page template for the front page of the forums.

Extra capabilities and roles added through my Members plugin:

Capabilities: Several for each taxonomy and the post type.

Roles: Forum Admin, Forum Moderator, Forum Member.

What do you think?

Right now, it's not a complete forum plugin. It's just the beginning.

I don't know if I'll fully develop it, but I want to at least provide the code at some point for those looking to do something like this or dive into custom post types. I'm not even sure this is a one-man job.

I just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on using a plugin like this as opposed to forum software.

As requested by Justin, I'm posting this as an idea.

Months ago, Taylor asked about removing comments from the single page. He didn't want to see comments closed or any other indication that comments might have been possible.

Justin suggested removing the code that generates the "Comments are Closed" but that leaves a small box because of the div - still suggesting that something was there.

My solution was to remove the following from page.php:

<div id="comments-template">
<?php comments_template(); ?>
</div>

This of course works but maybe we could have an option to globally disable comments for page posts along with eliminating any vestigial elements. Something like that. :)

I am working on a new project for a 5 star accommodation in the Catskills. Of course Hybrid. After looking at many spectacular designs for inspiration, from all the best hotels in the world, everything pointed me to doing this in WordPress. I have started from o'l skel and this will evolve because there is no rush and the people are great.
