No problem - I generally change the byline & post meta so I'll be editing the files anyway.

Could let us know whether any code in template files has changed when you do updates & if we need to redo the child theme.

I did think about asking for byline & postmeta to be done as includes so it would be easier change - but then arranged them differently on 2 templates within a day so realised how pointless that would be. I'm trying to get templates made to match what I already have so I'm ready for 2.7.

No, scratch that idea. Now I remember I tried it, but the filter will mess up widgets and navigation menus as well. There might be a way, I'll have to check.

If you're using the Hybrid theme, you don't have to change them manually. You can use a filter in your child theme's
functions.php
file to not link. If you want me to show you how to do this, just open a new thread in the support forums.

I hate self linking pages - but looks likes I'm in the minority, so I'll keep changing them manually :)
I stopped using them after server logs showed a couple of SE getting caught in a loop, requesting the same page repeatedly. PR did improve but that could just be coincidence or algo change.

I've played around with it a bit. I think I'm in agreement with most of you — I say keep the links.

I feel cheated when I'm hovering over a breadcrumb and when I reach the title I can't click on it, because it's the active page.

I actually like to click on links, and because of this I also like to click on titles if it's clickable. It just feels right ;-)

For me it all comes down to similar behavior. I want things to act alike. If I'm on the frontpage I can click on the home link, eventhough it just resreshes the page (but something might have happened in the last 5 minutes, that I just can't live without). The same with a page where I might have commented, instead of just pressing F5 I can press the title, and see now there's another comment...

The great post is the new frontpage :-)

EDIT:
Why not add a heatmap to your http://www.justintadlock.com where I can see that we can click on titles.

Linked, please, if only because it's the convention that most blogs use---but like Dave, I wonder why.

I think that depends on what blogs you visit. I'm coming across more and more blogs every day that don't link the post/page title. Of course, I read more blogs that would be more likely to not link.

I think I'm going to play around with it a bit first. WordPress provides the template tags to not link. Plus, the Default theme doesn't link to the titles either.

One other thing I'm thinking is that it's done for all other pages (i.e. Search, Category, Date). I think the design should be consistent.

The only reason I haven't in the past is because on posts/pages you can comment and the comment ID gets attached to the URL or coming from a different page through the comment link adds the
comments
ID to the URL. Neither of these represent the permalink.

What happens if someone is going to link back to you in their story and use a permalink like
http://yoursite.com/example-post#comments
? I wonder if the ping still goes through.

I have wondered why on the posts & pages that the link was included as you were already on the post or page. I haven't tried switching to just the title without the link so don't know if it would make any difference SEO wise as I am delighted with the SEO results & didn't want to mess with them.
However, using Options & Spartan, when viewing a post attachment, I would like to see the link but for it to link back to the post rather than the attachment you are viewing, but then again maybe that should be something that can be done by using breadcrumbs on the attachment page...

What I mean by the title of this thread is that I'm trying to decide whether the title on posts and pages should be linked.

Would it be better to link the title on posts and pages? Or, not link the title?

Your opinions, please.
