Fri, 30 Sep 2011 21:40:58 +0000 Egyptological 3714@
When I built our site we needed tabbed menus in some places - largely to stop the menu getting too deep. If you don't know what I mean then take a look at

I was inexperienced and in a hurry, so I built it into the theme. (A child theme of Hybrid.) I am in the process of re-coding the theme and moving more of it into plugins to make it modular and easier for me to configure different sites as needed. The latest thing to move to a plugin is the tab menu. Now I can just keep it for personal use, or I can put in the extra work to make it more flexible and release it to the public. There is no point in doing that though if nobody would be interested.

I looked at a number of plugins and didn't like any of them. Menus were hard to maintain. My approach is simple. In your main menu give any item which is to be a tab parent ("Write for Us") on the example page, a CSS class of tab-parent and it and its children are displayed as a tab menu. No extra menus to maintain. Trivial to turn on and off. My main menu has about half a dozen of them, at different depths.

It's all working but if I am to release then I need to sort out the CSS which is still in the theme. At present that is being used to hide the unwanted part of the main menu so it doesn't display twice - that needs changing to edit the menu to remove the section rather than hide it with CSS so it works with JS menus too. I also would need to test with pure Hybrid and maybe some more themes.

At present it is inserting the tab menu at hybrid_before_content but I can add any extra hooks people want - I have a plugin options page set up already.

There are two constraints:

1) It only works with one menu. It might be possible to get around that but so few sites use two menus I honestly cannot be bothered to spend the time
2) The tabbed menu has to be lower down the page than the main menu - i.e. processed after the widget or theme area which contains the main menu. So if you have a menu in the footer, cannot help, sorry.

Kate
superboy on "Custom Video gallery plugin or page template (or other alternatives)" Tue, 20 Sep 2011 20:57:11 +0000 superboy 3699@
I'm looking for someone to make a plugin or something that can make my Hybrid/Outline website look and function like the website. I've outlined my requirements here (it's a downloadable pdf or image explaining everything):

I have two goals: keep the cost down, and I want to be able to use it without diving into any coding other than css and shortcodes. I need it to work with Hybrid, not necessarily this child theme though. I would consider some of Justin's or his friends' other themes, but I am used to Hybrid, and I will want to tweak it in the future, but I want this plugin to still work if I change stuff later. That's why I want the galleries to work with pages and posts, so I can stick it anywhere in my site in an easy way. Please let me know if anyone is interested.

My contact is below:
aram{at}compleximaginary{dot}com
Egyptological on "Taxonomy Search Builder Plugin Updated" Wed, 01 Jun 2011 23:16:36 +0000 Egyptological 3584@
I haven't promoted this plugin - called Taxonomy Picker - before so I will mention that I have just issued an update. The idea is simple. If you have added custom taxonomies for say Size, Color and Product then this query gives you a widget which allows your visitors to select Size=Medium, Color=Red and Product=T-Shirt and run the query. No coding needed (other than adding your taxonomies).

The latest version (v.1.5.2) added an options screen with a small number of useful site settings:

1) You can show counts. (I will cache this for efficiency in the next version.)

2) You can forget or remember the query - so if you "remember" and somebody has just searched for Size=Medium then the widget will start with Size=Medium selected. If you don't select "remember" then Size would start with All Items selected. Simple.

I also added a choice of text for the "All" option so you could now have it display in the example above "All Shirts", "All Sizes" and "All Colors" rather than simply "All Items".

It was of course written for my site so it is in use at if you wish to play with it. We don't have huge amounts of data yet so try something like What=Tombs and When=19th Dynasty (It's an Egyptology site.) You'll notice that also restricts it to a predefined set of Categories. Useful if you wish to restrict searches to particular sections of your site.

I need a horizontal version, preferably in a shortcode so they are my development priorities, but I do add things others requested even if I don't use them myself - like counts and naming for the All option. I want to Ajaify it as well but that will take 2 - 3 months I guess.

More Details: About Taxonomy Picker
Justin Tadlock on "Get The Image Plugin Issue and squished pictures" Mon, 02 May 2011 17:02:56 +0000 Justin Tadlock 3547@
Please post all support questions in the support forums. Sat, 02 Oct 2010 14:37:51 +0000 legrah 3312@
I was using wp-hive prior to WP3.0 multisite coming on the scene, now I'm converting all sites to WP3.0. Sun, 08 Aug 2010 17:55:23 +0000 Egyptological 3229@
Within my child theme I have code which creates virtual blogs within a single blog. Each virtual blog can have it's own Site Title, Site Description and stylesheet. I'm removing the code for separate menus and will rely on the new WP3.0 menu system in conjuction with Widgetlogic. It doesn't separate posts in the database or anything fancy - it's just something fairly simple.

Structurally it belongs in a plugin rather than within the theme so I'll be migrating it to a plugin. I could generalise it and release it generally, so I thought I'd ask whether there is any interest in a virtual blog plugin now we have wp3.0 networks. I'll continue to use it myself because I find it easier to manage virtual blogs within a site than a network - and of course I can combine both.

Theoretically it could be generalised and work with any theme but I am so used to Hybird I find it easier to write just for Hybrid and I've no need for anything that works on other themes.
Thomas Clausen on "Query Posts additions" Wed, 12 May 2010 13:24:24 +0000 Thomas Clausen 3059@
Here's another thing that would be nice in the Query Posts plugin:

It basically retrieves popular posts in a period of time (current week, month, year or in last 30 days) by comment count.
vpix on "Hide slider ...?"
