Ok I just installed Hybrid, but I have no idea how to tweak it.... In fact, I really do not know how to do much in Word Press.... yesterday I spent quite a few hours trying to do a tutorial on making your own themes. But I gave up after the index page step....

SO, I want to know if in the paid section - IS there tutorials that will help me to get up and running and tweaking of Hybrid - I will probably install Hybrid News as well.... I want a front page that has lots of sections.... But I need help which assumes you know nothing.....

I have worked with blogger for several years (even at tweaking / making my own template changes).... so I do know a little bit....

Thank you for your help!

Justin Tadlock on "Hybrid and BuddyPress"

I wanted to open up an official topic that deals specifically with the Hybrid theme and BuddyPress because this can be a huge topic in and of itself.

What we'll be discussing here is ideas about the best way to integrate BuddyPress features and theme templates into the Hybrid theme.

Some rules for Hybrid

Integration cannot affect WP users that don't use BuddyPress.

BuddyPress needs to be as separate from the core framework as possible to avoid as much extra PHP running for non-BuddyPress users.

That's basically it at this point. Hybrid is a WordPress theme first and foremost. It's purpose isn't to be a BuddyPress theme, but one of its goals can be for complete integration with BuddyPress.

Some ideas

I'm thinking of making a separate
/buddypress
folder inside of
/hybrid
. Hybrid would then check to see if BuddyPress is installed before loading any of those files.

Everything about BuddyPress would live inside of the
/buddypress
directory, including templates. I don't really want to clutter the root
/hybrid
folder with a lot of extra templates and folders.

Where I stand

There's a reason Hybrid is good at what it's used for — I've been using and developing with WordPress for years. I've spent a few days, at most, playing around with BuddyPress. Diving straight into this thing without a lot of feedback, usage, and tinkering around with the code won't work well.

I need to understand the system and how the system is used before making Hybrid compatible with BuddyPress.

ETA?

I don't want to set any kind of timeframe on this. There's just too much involved to even begin to start thinking about when it'll be ready.

Your turn

Offer any feedback, ideas, links to other BP themes, documentation, and whatever else you feel would help.

Justin Tadlock on "Hybrid version 0.8 discussion"

I wanted to give myself a bit of a break before getting into discussing Hybrid 0.8 There was such a change between the 0.6 and 0.7 branch that I needed to cool off for a bit.

But, it's now time to start thinking about version 0.8. I'll start off by listing some of the things I'd like to see, and I hope we have as much input as we did in the 0.7, which ended up with 149 posts.

Page template name changes

In 0.7, I deprecated all the file names of the custom page templates. What I'd like to do is finish the template hierarchy change by making all page templates begin with
page-
. This makes things much more organized.

For example, the
archives.php
file would be changed to
page-archives.php
, the
biography.php
template file would be changed to
page-biography.php
, and so on.

I want people to be able to recognize these as page templates.

Full support of custom post type templates

WP 3.0 is getting massive changes for support of custom post types. I'd like to make sure all post types follow the same pattern as posts and pages do in the template hierarchy. So, the hierarchy would be:

{$post_type}-{$custom}.php
{$post_type}-{$post->post_name}.php
{$post_type}-{$post->ID}.php
{$post_type}.php

This also goes along with the name changes of the page templates.

Atomic hooks allow more than one argument

Right now, only
apply_atomic()
allows a single argument (other than the name of the hook).
do_atomic()
takes in no extra arguments. I'd like to be able to add any number of arguments to either.

If this is all Greek to you, don't worry. This is mostly a developer feature.

Change the byline and entry meta to shortcodes

In 0.7, I introduced the ability to use shortcodes in the byline and entry meta filters, but the default is still a bunch of jumbled up PHP code. Much of this has to do with preserving legacy functions.

But, I'd like to change the functions to shortcodes by default. This helps out with cutting back on code and makes it easier to translate.

Removal of Tabular Data extension

This extension (located in
/library/extensions/tabular-data.php
) was a legacy file carried over from the earliest days of Hybrid and hasn't been loaded by default in several versions.

The only person I know that actually uses it is me, and I don't even need it anymore.

Continue making the code lighter and more efficient

As with all releases, I want to cut back as much as possible while still offering the same or more functionality.

WordPress 2.9 makes developing custom post_type plugins much easier. Still to hard for me, although I would develop this myself if I had the knowledge. My idea is an editor to create new post types and associated post editors. WordPress offers post, page and attachment as standard post types. I need more post types. Some post types I'd personally like to add for some of my websites:

book (bibliography)

video

camera review

event (event calendar)

classified ad (I don't like the hacky classified ad themes and plugins that are currently available)

faq

product

wiki

photo

etc.

I know some plugins are already doing this job. I even tried all of them, but after reading what Justin Tadlock wrote about this I decided to stop using them.
Existing plugins doing this job in a "wrong" way:

Pods CMS

Magic Fields

Flutter

Anyone else interested in a plugin like this? Anyone interested in developing it?

First... I have no idea how I got along before now without firebug and YSlow.... especially the css assistance I am getting from firebug....

YSlow reports when javascript loads from the head. One of the recommendations is for them to load at the bottom of the page. Hybrid News w/ the
front-page.php
template loads 5 scripts... 4 at the top and one at the bottom.

2 at the top are base WP
2 at the top are Hybrid News
1 at bottom is Hybrid

Jscript files block parallel file downloads on the host from which they are being drawn. Since most folks are only serving WP from a single host this can present a pretty good lag... In the case I outline, it's 5 separate HTTP requests and each of them has to be served serially.

Without getting into what each one does, dependencies, et al. Does it not make sense to keep an eye on the number of script loads and where they load in mind when coding? And shouldn't we also be mindful of how many scripts we call and consider consolidating the scripts? At least at the WP level, the Hybrid level, and the Child Theme level....?

Maybe WP won't combine theirs, and Hybrid only has a single addition, but Hybrid News has two... apparently both required for the slider function on the home page.... Should at least these two files not be combined into a single script file?

I'm not a jscript programmer, so I don't know.

But it seems to me that proceeding from the assumption that fewer HTTP requests is generally better. Also, it would seem to be better that jscript should be allowed to block parallel downloading when it is least noticeable to the user.

It does appear that in most circumstances the JavaScript files are loading after all the CSS files.... which I understand (now) is a good thing.

I'm sure that far smarter folks than I have already addressed this, but as I learn more about this stuff I come up with questions and the questions bug me to such a degree that I can't focus on continuing to learn... ;)

BOTTOM LINE: Should we not look at combining script files and figure out which ones can and what order to load them at the bottom of the <body> section of each page?

PS: Couldn't decide what to TAG this post with...

In our discussion about making money from Theme Hybrid, one great idea was to offer a PSD to child theme service.

I wanted to open a topic that deals specifically with this idea. So, the floor is completely open.

Nothing has to be set in stone. We just need to go ahead and get the ideas rolling in, so we can make this happen.

I've been toying around with the idea of creating a forum that runs completely off WordPress. This makes it theme-able and allows you to use all of the WP functions within your forum. Plus, you can use any plugins you want alongside it because it would be based solely on WP.

Here's something I put together this evening using WP 3.0's new custom post types:
http://justintadlock.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/forum-idea.png

It's just a basic front page like what you see here on the Theme Hybrid forums.

Runs off of...

It took only a few things to make this possible:

Custom post type called "Forum Topic."

Two custom taxonomies called "Topic Tags" and "Forums".

A custom page template for the front page of the forums.

Extra capabilities and roles added through my Members plugin:

Capabilities: Several for each taxonomy and the post type.

Roles: Forum Admin, Forum Moderator, Forum Member.

What do you think?

Right now, it's not a complete forum plugin. It's just the beginning.

I don't know if I'll fully develop it, but I want to at least provide the code at some point for those looking to do something like this or dive into custom post types. I'm not even sure this is a one-man job.

I just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on using a plugin like this as opposed to forum software.

As requested by Justin, I'm posting this as an idea.

Months ago, Taylor asked about removing comments from the single page. He didn't want to see comments closed or any other indication that comments might have been possible.

Justin suggested removing the code that generates the "Comments are Closed" but that leaves a small box because of the div - still suggesting that something was there.

My solution was to remove the following from page.php:

<div id="comments-template">
<?php comments_template(); ?>
</div>

This of course works but maybe we could have an option to globally disable comments for page posts along with eliminating any vestigial elements. Something like that. :)

Hi all didn't see an official introductory thread so I'm starting my own.
Thanks to Justin for ThemeHybrid, which I've yet to install by the way.
Hoping all goes well so I don't come to the forums sniveling, whining and otherwise kvetching, lol.

Thinking to begin with a child theme of Hybrid News.
Maybe toss in a BBPress install, or throw it out to MUWordpress

In a premium thread discussion I noticed some hybrid news discussion and a couple gems a child theme malleable and http://american-idol-updates.com/ (a closet idol fan here).

I've been lucky enough to be a professional web designer for some 10 years, playing on the computer. Wordpress dev could open the door to bigger and better things that's for sure.

I'm a total forum addict with thousands of total posts if you combine, stylegala.com, expressionengine.com and various disc golf (frisbee golf) sites.

Plugin is here:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/template-tag-shortcodes

I'm hoping to launch a new version of this plugin in January, so I'm looking for ideas. Are there any template tags or WP functions that haven't been covered? Is there something missing that you'd like to see added?

What is Template Tag Shortcodes?

It is a plugin that turns many of the WordPress function (i.e., template tags) into shortcodes that you can use within shortcode-ready areas (e.g., post editor).

If you ask me, it's probably my most-useful plugin.

Some of you have expressed interest in me building some BuddyPress themes on top of the Hybrid theme framework. I've always thought this was a great idea.

What is BuddyPress?

Basically, it's a set of WPMU plugins that turn it into a full-fledged social network, allowing user profiles and blogs.
http://buddypress.org

Everything is modular, so you only use the components you want.

BuddyPress for WordPress (not MU)

What? BuddyPress will also be getting a release as a set of plugins for a typical WordPress install. This is going to be huge because many people have a hard time setting up WPMU. This will remove that entry barrier and allow more bloggers to enjoy setting up social networks.

I think the only thing that would be missing is the multi-blog functionality of MU. Of course, you probably still wouldn't want to run BuddyPress on a typical shared hosting setup.

Read more about this here:
http://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=1473

Opening up the floor

BuddyPress is brand new, so there's not a lot that's been done as far as themes are concerned. Heck, I don't even know where to start.

So, I'm opening up the floor for all of you to share ideas, concepts, or anything.

It didn't look like the book at least in the TOC mentioned anything about frameworks.

Should I edit the default Hybrid theme or should I change to the skeleton theme then make it look like the Hybrid theme then edit. Next to change the overall blog appearance should I edit the screen.css file to accomplish this. Please be patient because I am very NEW to this layout.

I would love to see a library of common code snippets/answers based on "How do I do XXXXXX". I think that Hybrid is great, but at the moment I find it hard to think through how best to do certain things - if there was a dedicated section of the site that just had example code it would probably save lots of questions in the forums too.

I think that you make fantastic plugins, but for first timers here, they wouldn't even know. Let the plugins get a tab in the horizontal navigation. I bet that a lot of your fans would be thrilled to be able to access the readme files for instance. I's just annoying to have to open the ftp program to find it, or to download a plugin again to find the readme files...

I want to write a WordPress Plugin.

I have read some of the documentation about how 'hooks" work but I do not know which hooks to take advantage of.

I want to write a plugin that launches a separate page when a new user wants to add a new comment.

In other words, I want the ability to insist that the user add more than just a username and email. I want to require that more information be inputted.

Maybe such a plug-in already exists or perhaps something simular. Does this sound familiar?

The Plugin I want to make is a page that comes up after a new user clicks on the “Submit Content” button when posting a reply to a blog. What sort of Filters or Hooks to I need to use?

I have been told that I wouldn't necessarily need another page. I could just more options in the regular comments area if I just want to the user to input more information. If so, could I include a couple of buttons that would launch the "about us" page in a separate browser?

Hi Justin.

I am using your Hybrid theme options a lot and there are a couple of things that I would like to have in the Theme Options.

1. It would nice to be able to change the title of the "Hybrid post settings" in the tab bar. I create websites for other people and they will just find it confusing when they see "Hybrid post settings". So if I could change it to "Meta tags" or whatever, then that would be great.

2. At the moment the "Hybrid post settings" include title, description, keywords, series, thumbnail and template. Again, many of my users wont need all these options, so if it was possible to them optional in the theme options page that would be great. :-)

According to BuddyPress, one can use any theme without modifications. However, it doesn't quite work right. I would love to see Hybrid as the engine/main theme behind a site that uses BuddyPress and WPMU.

I've tried to do it myself, but I just don't know very much. I see that you have to add buddypress-home theme files into hybrid theme files to be able to use it as the home theme of a buddypress site (plugin-sidebar.php and plugin-template.php) but then it seems like hybrid goes to no-sidebar. I also moved over some of the functions.php. And there are 404 errors. So it is not quite seamless and I'm not knowledgeable enough to do it myself.

BuddyPress just went beta. I would think more and more people are/will be on the market for another home theme from which to build a social networking site. Hybrid would be an awesome theme engine to run a social network site, it just needs a couple more things (I think).

If you were to consider putting out a Hybrid that is BuddyPress ready, I would like to see it pretty simple in style, so that one could skin it easily. I do allright with skins, just not with code.

I am initially addressing this to Justin, but also to ask if anyone else would be interested in this. If there isn't interest, I will consider posting my request in the Jobs area to see about paying to have it done just for me.

Just a suggestion here. I read a post today by Andrew Ozz explaining how to easily restyle the visual editor in the WordPress admin panel. I was wondering if this might perhaps be a good thing to include in Hybrid.

http://azaozz.wordpress.com/2010/01/02/can-themes-style-the-visual-editor/

Perhaps a CSS file could be checked for in the theme folder and when present, loaded to restyle the visual editor to act as a real wysiwyg editor.

Hi Justin

I have a little suggestion to manage the translations. I've used Limesurvey a lot, and they have this script:

I would propose a metadescription logic in Hybrid, that was extended compared to today. Now it works with this priority:

1. Show Hybrid metadescription
2. Show the WordPress build-in excerpt

But I think it would be cool if the priority was extended to this:
1. Show Hybrid metadescription
2. Show WordPress build-in excerpt
3. Show the first X characters of the post

I know some plugins can help me with this, but this would just make the theme even more SEO-ready :-)

Hi,
sorry if this is a wrong forum. I felt encouraged to post since the readme file says:

Shortcodes Component

There are several shortcodes that you can use in your post/page editor. These need some major testing right now, so please offer any feedback you can.

The problem I have is this: if I wrap simple text with [access] shortcode - it works fine. However, if I put there an image wrapped with [caption] - Wordpress stops interpreting the caption shortcode and just prints it as it was in the edit post window. Any ideas what may be wrong here?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Bartek.

Since redesigning ThemeHybrid's forums, I've found a passion for developing with bbPress again. Sure, it was a pain doing some of it, but it was also pretty fun.

My next bbPress theme will be called BB Experiment. It will be based off the ideas behind the Hybrid WordPress theme. The reason behind the name is that this is literally an experiment so that I can learn more about bbPress. Eventually, I'd like to release a full-fledged bbPress theme framework to match Hybrid, but I need to understand the system a lot better first.

Differences between WP themes and bbPress themes

Most of you know that WordPress themes can be used to accomplish pretty much anything through its templating system. Well, if you're familiar with bbPress at all, you've probably noticed it has a much more advanced templating system. I'd argue better in many respects. But, this leaves things more open ended as far as how things should be structured. Figuring it all out can be confusing, even for me.

I've been working with blogs for a few years now, and knowing how to set them up, structurally, is second nature to me now. But, a forum is an entirely different beast.

On to the questions

Should a sidebar (yes, we can use sidebar in this discussion) be shown on every page?

What things in the Hybrid WP theme do you think would carry over well into a forum?

What do you think should be a part of the theme?

Those are just some general questions. I want this to be pretty open to any type of discussion. You can even use the forums here as an example for discussion if you'd like.

First, I'd like to say I really enjoyed all the feedback and discussion on Hybrid 0.6 in these past few months. It really helped shape the final release.

With Hybrid 0.6 officially out, it's time to open up the discussion on what should be added to the next major release. It'll likely be a few months before this release, so there's no rush. If you have an idea, just post it anytime.

Some things may get pushed into 0.6.1 or 0.6.2 or back to 0.8. We'll just have to see.

Much of what went into 0.6 was what I had originally planned for 0.7, but the long wait between WordPress updates gave me some time to add extra stuff in. So, I'm going to start from a blank slate.

Refinement of how to handle custom taxonomies

Version 0.6 handles taxonomies well, especially with the
taxonomy.php
template and the breadcrumbs. But, it's mostly been focused on taxonomies for posts. I'd like to branch out and allow the theme to handle taxonomies with attachments and pages a little better.

More on this later.

Entry meta and byline revisement

Version 0.5 introduced filter hooks for these, but they still need some touching up. Localization of the byline has been tough and is always changing. I'm thinking of just rewriting this stuff from the ground up, which should make it easier for you translators.

There's also situations where pages are given the same treatment as posts (like in the search results), showing the "Uncategorized" category when it shouldn't.

Comments area hooks

The comments area is seriously lacking in action and filter hooks. If you want to change how something works here, it can be pretty tough. This is partially because of how WordPress 2.7+ threaded comments changed things.

Where would you like to see action hooks in the comments area? What things would you like to filter?

Faster, lighter CSS

@importing many CSS files can slow things down a bit. I'd like to hear some ideas on how to deal with this in a way that doesn't break anyone's child theme.

We could even discuss alternate plugins. At the very least, it's something that should probably addressed on this site by way of tutorials or something.
